The Flowering Desert: when and where to see it

The Flowering Desert is one of the most astonishing natural phenomena on the planet: when more rain than usual falls on the Atacama Desert, thousands of seeds dormant under the ground for years germinate and turn the arid plains into a carpet of purple, white and yellow flowers. It doesn't happen every year, which makes it even more special.
When does the Flowering Desert happen?
The phenomenon depends on winter rains (June to August). If it rains enough, the bloom usually appears between September and November, peaking in October. In El Niño years it tends to be more intense. Before traveling, check the season's official reports, since its intensity and location change every year.
Where to see it
- Llanos de Challe National Park (near Huasco): one of the best protected places to see it.
- Route 5, between Vallenar and Copiapó: blooms often appear on both sides of the highway.
- Carrizal Bajo and Totoral area: coastal zones known for their diversity of species.
Visit it responsibly
- Never step on or pick the flowers: many are endemic and fragile.
- Always stay on marked trails and roads.
- Take all your trash with you and don't remove plants or seeds.
