At more than 3,700 m above sea level, this altiplanic lagoon sits beside the Maricunga Salt Flat, surrounded by snow-capped volcanoes. Flamingos, vicuñas and an immense silence make it one of the most pristine landscapes in the Andes of Atacama.
Three species of Andean flamingos feed in the shallow waters, with the volcanoes reflected behind them.
Vicuñas, guanacos and rheas roam the altiplano around the Maricunga Salt Flat.
The route continues toward Laguna Verde and Ojos del Salado, the highest volcano on Earth.
From Copiapó: about 165 km (3.5–4 h) via Route 31-CH toward Paso San Francisco. A 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended; there is no fuel or signal en route.
At 3,700 m altitude sickness (puna) is common. Ascend gradually, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol and move slowly. Not advised right after arriving from sea level.
October to April for better weather. In winter snow can close the road. Always start early — afternoon winds are strong.
Go with a local guide and combine Laguna Santa Rosa with Laguna Verde and the Maricunga Salt Flat.
